The must-see sporting events in Porto Cervo

A calendar full of events to experience sport at the highest level immersed in one of the most beautiful settings in the Mediterranean

The glamorous summer season in Porto Cervo and its vicinity revolves around a busy calendar of sports events and competitions, offering not only the thrill of spectating, but also the opportunity to practise a number of sports in superb facilities, surrounded by unparalleled scenery and accompanied by services that go far beyond normal standards of excellence each year.

At Pevero Golf Club, Sundays in August and September are earmarked for prestigious competitions including the Coppa del Presidente (3 August) and the Matsuhisa Cala di Volpe Golf Cup (7 September), with additional events happening every Thursday in August. This is an 18-hole course, 6,107 metres long and par 72, famous for its extraordinarily beautiful scenery. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the course winds among granite rocks, lakes and mediterranean scrub, offering spectacular views of the Gulf of Pevero and the Cala di Volpe bay. The wind – the Mistral in particular – adds unpredictability and technical complexity, making every stroke a challenge. The Club House is an exclusive haven with panoramic terraces, a bar and a restaurant that celebrates Sardinian cuisine.

Porto Cervo is also the birthplace of one of the world’s most iconic nautical associations, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS). This is a genuine temple to sailing, a symbol of exclusivity that translates into passion for the sea, a spirit of competition and an ongoing thirst for innovation. The club’s prestige is confirmed by two stellar events in the international sailing calendar: from 7 to 13 September it hosts the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, a legendary competition organised with the International Maxi Association and sponsored by Rolex; then 21 to 27 September brings a stage in the 52 Super Series, the world’s most competitive monohull yacht racing circuit. A week of top-level regattas will see the best international teams competing in a stunningly beautiful setting.

A few minutes’ walk from the centre of Porto Cervo is Cervo Tennis Club. The club’s crowning glory is four state-of-the-art GreenSet courts, which are highly rated by all the top players who have visited. In addition there’s a padel court, two swimming pools (one heated in winter), a squash court, a Technogym and a wellness centre: the whole place is a landmark for lovers of tennis and other sports in their most exclusive format. Meanwhile, four kilometres away at Hotel Cala di Volpe, the Mouratoglou Academy – the quintessential tennis school founded by one of the world’s top trainers, Patrick Mouratoglou – is a top-of-the-range destination that attracts a global clientele.
