Maxi sailing yachts 2025: green innovation, luxury design, and cutting-edge technology

From new sustainable solutions to ultra-light materials, not to mention increasingly refined aesthetics: this is how the latest generation of large sailing yachts are changing

During the summer months in the Mediterranean, it’s not uncommon to spot one: majestic, imposing, sails fully unfurled in all their splendor-breathtaking to behold. Among the seven largest sailing yachts in the world are the Sailing Yacht A, Black Pearl, Sea Cloud, Athena, Maltese Falcon, Aquijo, and Eos; these are vessels of extraordinary scale, equipped with advanced technology for navigation and comfort, while preserving the timeless allure of traditional sailing ships.

The Maltese Falcon, built by the renowned Perini Navi shipyard in Viareggio, is a prime example: an 88-meter sailing yacht famed for its groundbreaking sail plan, with three freestanding masts and square sails spanning 2,500 square meters. Its hallmark feature is the DynaRig system, allowing for swift and easy sail handling, making it a high-tech marvel under sail. Despite being launched in 2006, the Falcon remains a benchmark in the world of luxury sailing yachts, its design still a source of inspiration for new builds.

Nilaya, Royal Huisman

A new generation of maxi sailing yachts is now rewriting the rules of elegance and performance at sea, combining cutting-edge materials, visually striking lines, and a design philosophy that makes no compromises between speed, comfort, and sustainability. Here are some of the newest entries. Among the silent giants, Nilaya leads the way-the latest creation from Royal Huisman. At 47 meters, she is a collaboration between Reichel/Pugh and Nauta Design for the interiors, delivering a yacht that blends the grandeur of a classic cruiser with engineering solutions worthy of an offshore racer. The interior fit-out, understated yet refined, enhances every detail without ostentation, staying true to the Dutch tradition of pure excellence.

The new Swan128, at 39 meters, represents the most sophisticated evolution of the Nautor’s Swan philosophy. Built for bluewater cruising, racing, and long-term onboard living, this is a yacht that speaks the language of speed with the refinement of a high-end residence, where every element is meticulously designed to serve the harmony of the whole.

For those focused on tangible sustainability and future-forward vision, the answer is Simena62—a 62-meter ketch built by Ares Yachts with exterior design by Taka Yachts. It features a hybrid propulsion system that cuts fuel consumption and emissions without compromising performance or range. With sharp, dynamic lines, innovative materials, and a forward-thinking design ethos, it is already considered a future classic.

Wallywind110 (ph. Toni Meneguzzo)

The Wallywind110 stands as a prime example of seamless integration of speed, comfort, and sustainability. At just over 33 meters (110 feet) in carbon fiber, it is a perfect fusion of sleek minimalism and dynamic power, made for those who crave the thrill of racing while demanding generous, impeccably crafted spaces—hallmarks of the Ferretti Group, which has owned Wally since 2019. Naturally, its signature style comes from Luca Bassani, Wally’s founder and chief designer, whose bold and innovative approach continues to redefine the sporty soul of sailing.

Equally iconic is Kiboko 4, the second hull in the SW108 series by Southern Wind, with design by Nauta Design and Farr Yacht Design. At 35.5 meters, it strikes a flawless balance between performance and elegance and has already been honored with the prestigious World Superyacht Award. Clean exterior lines, luminous interiors, and a technical layout tailored for long voyages make it a dream yacht for experienced and passionate owners. It feels at home in any setting, whether slicing through the racecourse or anchored in a quiet bay. The Mylius M72, from the Piacenza-based shipyard Mylius Yachts, represents the sportiest expression of Italian craftsmanship: a 72-foot (just over 21 meters) carbon fiber yacht built for those seeking thrilling performance, exceptional maneuverability, and refined aesthetics. Finally, the Grand Soleil 80 Long Cruise—a 24-meter cruiser made for long-distance sailing with an Italian heart. Built by Cantiere del Pardo, with a composite hull reinforced in carbon fiber and onboard accommodations that feel like a true seaside villa, it perfectly illustrates how comfort and safety can coexist with a sporty spirit, without ever sacrificing elegance
