La Viarte: wines from the colli orientali del Friuli

The winery showcases the hills of Friuli through wines made from Ponca, native grape varieties, and the Polegato family’s new vision

There are places where wine is not merely the result of a harvest, but a profound expression of a landscape. La Viarte, an estate in the heart of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, in Prepotto, belongs to this rare category: that of wineries capable of transforming the land into identity, tradition into a contemporary language, and the wine glass into a form of storytelling.

Since 2023, La Viarte has entered a new phase in its history thanks to the Polegato family, who have taken on the legacy of vineyards over forty years old to propel it toward the future. This transition does not erase its roots but makes them even more central. Because redefining the concept of wine—as the winery’s philosophy states—means, first and foremost, listening to what the land has to say.

The Colli Orientali del Friuli and the Power of Ponca

The estate spans 38 hectares, of which 24 are planted with vines and 13 are forested, forming a single hilly tract at an elevation of approximately 150–200 meters above sea level. Here, the vineyards face east and southeast, nestled in a landscape where nature, history, and viticulture strike an almost natural balance.

The deepest secret behind La Viarte’s wines is the Ponca, the soil typical of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, composed of marl and sandstone of Eocene origin. It is a crumbly, demanding, yet generous soil, capable of encouraging the vine’s roots to dig deep and of yielding wines of great finesse, tension, savory depth, and elegance. It is not merely soil: it is a geological memory that translates into character in the glass.

LA VIARTE

A Friulian winery blending native grape varieties with winemaking precision

La Viarte draws on a broad and representative selection of Friuli’s heritage: Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Schioppettino, Pignolo, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Tazzelenghe, Picolit, and Verduzzo, alongside international grape varieties interpreted with a sense of the region’s character, such as Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Bianco.

The winemaking approach stems from listening to the land and seeking balance. Harvests are done by hand; winemaking respects the identity of each grape variety; and aging—in stainless steel or oak, depending on the label—aims to complement the wine without overpowering it. The result is a diverse collection that appeals to different audiences while maintaining a clear focus: to authentically showcase the Colli Orientali del Friuli.

From classic wines to great reserve reds

Among the most representative expressions are the Classic Whites—fresh, balanced, and distinctive wines designed to convey the territory’s most immediate character. The Liende line, on the other hand, was created as a special selection reserved for the best vintages, with wines that offer a deeper and more complex interpretation of the terroir.

Alongside the whites, La Viarte devotes great attention to Friuli’s native red varieties. Schioppettino, Pignolo, Tazzelenghe, and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso become wines of structure, time, and memory, capable of combining power and finesse. Then there are the Non Filtrati, a tribute to more ancient fermentation techniques, and the Siùm passito, made from Picolit and Verduzzo, intended to be cellared and savored slowly.

La Viarte: A New Vision for Friulian Wine

Today, La Viarte presents itself as a contemporary Friulian winery, yet one deeply rooted in its landscape. The new generation, led by the Polegato family, embraces innovation without breaking with tradition: here, the future stems from the ability to observe more closely what already exists—the hills, the woods, the rows of vines, the light, the wind, and the reflections in the wine glasses.

This is the strength of La Viarte: not chasing trends, but giving a new voice to a borderland—generous yet austere—where wine remains an act of gratitude toward nature and toward people. A gesture of love that, harvest after harvest, continues to redefine how Friuli is portrayed to the world.
