Arzachena, students and community on the beach for Clean Beach Day

Educating respect for the sea starting with the youngest: a day of microplastics, science and civic engagement

The YCCS Clean Beach Day was held this morning at Cala Granu beach, an event symbolizing the joint efforts of institutions, schools, scientific bodies and local businesses to protect the marine environment. The initiative, an integral part of AgendaBLU 2025, the calendar promoted by the Municipality of Arzachena to raise environmental awareness, was organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the patronage of the municipality, the support of the Costa Smeralda Consortium, One Ocean Foundation and Sailors for the Sea.

Clean Beach Day

Protagonists of the day were 115 first graders from the secondary schools of Arzachena and Abbiadori, engaged in the collection of plastics and microplastics on the sandy shore of Cala Granu, a beach with very clear sand and emerald waters. Guided by researchers Andrea De Lucia and Andrea Camedda of the CNR in Oristano - partners in the European REMEDIES project, dedicated to plastic pollution and the development of biocompatible materials - the students took part in a training course that combined direct observation, science and ecological awareness.

Enriching the experience was the reading of some thoughts written by students at the event, inspired by the UNESCO theme of World Oceans Day. At the end of the day, five students-one from each class-were drawn to receive a free sailing course at the YCCS Sailing School as a prize, confirming that environmental education also comes through direct experience of the sea.

Clean Beach Day

Clean Beach Day is part of a broader path of environmental responsibility pursued by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda also through participation in Sailors for the Sea's Clean Regattas program, which evaluates the sustainability of sporting events. The two May regattas - RC44 Porto Cervo Cup and Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta - received Platinum certification, the highest level, thanks to meeting 19 out of 20 required criteria.

With eight events scheduled until October along the 88 kilometers of Arzachen coastline, AgendaBLU confirms itself as a virtuous project, uniting institutions, science and citizens in the defense of the most precious natural heritage: the sea.
