Belmond redefines the art of hospitality in Sardinia, between charm and authenticity
Christian Boyens tells us about the Romazzino hotel and how the iconic hôtellerie brand consolidated its presence in the Mediterranean
There’s an elegant harmony that arises from the combination of beautiful natural surroundings, iconic architecture and the art of hospitality. And in this charmed space we find the latest vision from Belmond - hôtellerie d’excellence brand of the LVMH group, owned by Bernard Arnault - which chooses Sardinia to consolidate its presence in the Mediterranean. In a place where time seems to stand still, suspended between crystal-clear sea and luxuriant gardens, there’s a new lease of life for the Romazzino, the jewel of international hospitality, which celebrates its sixtieth birthday this year. We discuss it with Christian Boyens, Vice President & Divisional Leader for Southern Europe & the United Kingdom at Belmond, to explore the drivers of this strategic choice geared to increasingly authentic and experiential luxury.
Christian Boyens, Vice President & Divisional Leader Southern Europe & United Kingdom di BelmondPorto Cervo has always been one of the world’s most iconic tourist destinations. What made you choose it for your expansion project?
Porto Cervo is the perfect choice to complete our portfolio of resorts in the Mediterranean, thanks to its historical value, stunning natural beauty and the architecture of its hotel complexes, all essential elements in the Belmond experience. Collaboration with an exceptional partner like Smeralda Holding was undoubtedly an enormous advantage too.
Designed by the acclaimed architects Michele and Giancarlo Busiri Vici, Romazzino is one of Sardinia’s most iconic buildings, and this year it’s celebrating its sixtieth anniversary. What’s the significance of welcoming guests to a place with such a wealth of history and architecture?
For us it’s an honour to be able to bring our guests to such a prestigious venue, with decades of history and unique architecture surrounded by lush gardens. Our guests are really appreciative of our new beach and the improvements we’ve made in these first two years of operation; but most of all they value our team, the high-quality service and the friendliness of the staff, which is what brings them back year after year.
RomazzinoNowadays travel is seen increasingly as an all-round experience. How do you envisage the development of experiential tourism?
The experiential element is becoming increasingly decisive in the choice of destination: the opportunity to disconnect from our busy lives, reconnect with ourselves, learn about the culture and traditions of the area, immerse ourselves in nature and opt for a gentler pace of life are what underpins the concept of slow luxury, at the heart of Belmond. And that’s why we’re constantly expanding our offer with new food options, a new beach experience, a new sports centre, an extremely broad wellness offer and plenty of activities to enjoy with friends and family.
